Single Review - Them Boots - Scarlett Whincup

Scarlett Whincup is a natural born entertainer – she loves being on stage – and at some gigs she even loves being off it, taking to the dance floor to sing and line dance with the crowd.  It’s fitting then that her new single “Them Boots” has been written with line dancing in mind, with Alex Wise from Wise Moves involved from the start.

The song opens with a wonderful traditional country intro before the vocal comes in over handclaps.  It’s hard to write the review without typing in time to the beat!  The instruments on this track include a dobro and pedal teel alongside the guitar, which really gives it that “proper” country feel

Writing a song specifically for a line dance could fall into being cliched and manufactured, but the reality of this track is that while the melody makes you want to dance and is exactly the right pace for line-dancing, the lyrics accurately reflect the imagery of a western club and dancers dressed for the occasion

Those boots that hat those tight jeans on making me wanna write a song

These words are written by a performer who has stood on countless stages in front of the glitter curtain and sung her heart out watching people dancing to the sings she’s singing.  That is absolutely Scarlett’s experience, having been singing in clubs since the age of 13.  Her busy schedule, and years of experience mean that Scarlett is ideally placed to comment on not just the UK Country scene, but the social club genre in general – which she covered in her previous release “Glitter Curtain”

In a time of Tik Tok and TV talent shows creating and discarding instant and short lived “stars”, it is refreshing to hear the artists who have worked their way up, travelling around, unloading, singing, loading up again and heading off to the next venue.  In the UK scene we have, alongside Scarlett, artists like Kezia Gill who has a very similar background and Martin Boyd – who has shared the Pure Country CMF stage with Scarlett.

Them Boots will surely get your toes tapping, and for those who learned the dance early – their clips may feature in the official video!
