We all know her. Flaming locks of auburn hair with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green – that man stealing hussy.
We all know the song, we can all sing it word for word.
It's a well-known song about a well-known story. The man has his head turned, his wife doesn't want to lose him. She's not afraid to admit she's begging.
It’s an absolute staple for country fans and non-country fans alike, it’s a karaoke classic, a guaranteed party singalong.
It has also been covered, by Mindy Smith, The White Stripes, Strawberry Switchblade, Olivia Newton John, Me First and the Gimmee Gimmees, Dolly’s Goddaughter Miley Cyrus – there’s even a dance remix! In the 78 versions, there’s a Dolly Parton cover – in collaboration with Pentatonix.
To record not just a cover but an interpretation takes some guts - even
with three of your friends backing you up.
Jess Thristan has taken on the challenge, and having assembled her girls – Kezia Gill, Jade Helliwell and Demi Marriner - as her back up she has released a new imagining of the classic Jolene.
The delivery of this version is faultless,
with all four voices combining in near perfect harmonies, with the tempo slowed
right down, and an almost ethereal quality to the sound.
Rather than the begging of the original, this
feels like defeat. He’s gone, she’s taken him from you – its over.
Down but not out, this new single has allowed Jess and the three singers to show off a level of inventiveness and skill that perhaps they don’t always get to do. You can witness more of this as the quartet are taking their popular “Girls Night In The Round” back out on tour in February with dates in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Gateshead and Leeds. Tickets are available now, and are sure to sell very quickly!
Jolene, the new single from Jess Thristan is available to download and stream from Friday 2 February
